Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just a young girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth was raised in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She quit the school she attended after only two years in order to pursue acting as a profession. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles such as In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Her next job was as the "hat check" girl for a nightclub until she decided to quit and returned to Boston. She made the ends meet by working as an usherette throughout the day, and working at night with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. Drama studies led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
